What is a Chainwheel Operator for Valves

Hello students and welcome to another addition of Industrial Valco University where you can get your PVf degree for free. IV University is brought to you by ivalco.com where you can get over 25,000 line items of PVF with our 24/7 online ordering. Where you can get those item with speedability, which is having these items in stock, with error free will call or shipment, in 2 hours or less Today we are going to talk about Chain Wheels. I get a lot of questions about what a chainwheel operators does and how it works, so today we are going to discuss. In fact, just like when grandma takes the kids to mcdonalds on a Saturday afternoon and leave you and the wifey at home all alone for a bit.. this will be a quickie. All right lets get to it Chainwheel operators are designed to operate valves installed in inaccessible places. off camera picture of valve high up hopefully with chainwheel So for example lets say you have a valve that is 15 feet up in the air bolted to a pipe. on camera How can you turn it off and on actuator picture Well you can use an actuator that can open and close the valve remotely using electricity, but this can be very costly or a quick and easy way is with the chain wheel. Chainwheels easily attach to the handwheel of valves ranging from 2”-36” in diameter. Available in aluminum for gear operators on butterfly valves and other quarter turn products, and cast iron for handwheels on multi-turn valves. Standard Components can change depending on size and scope of the valve need, as you can see here the installation isn’t that hard as you can see the wheel fits snuggly on the top of the handle. Because of time I’m just going to show you how its done like so most chainwheels come simply enough with the wheel consisting of a sprocket, set collar, chain guide and slots. And to hold it in place some u straps carriage bolts and lock washers and nuts. Then of course you will need enough chain depending on where the valve will be placed. for this demonstration we are using the roto hammer CL series Chain wheel here from rotork that comes with easy to install instructions The Weldless chain is designed for use on standard chainwheels. Weldless chain is sometimes referred to as single loop lock link chain. Available in hot dipped galvanized, stainless steel, and brass. The chain wheel sizes are of course dependent on the size of the operator and the scope of the work. These chains are available for online ordering at ivalco.com and for your convenience will also give you the size of chain needed for the chain wheel. and that leads us to todays… did you know. DID YOU KNOW -a Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. It is often used to convey power to the wheels of a vehicle, particularly bicycles and motorcycles. It is also used in a wide variety of machines including water mills. Most often, the power is conveyed by a roller chain, known as the drive chain or transmission chain,[1] passing over a sprocket gear, with the teeth of the gear meshing with the holes in the links of the chain. The gear is turned, and this pulls the chain putting mechanical force into the system. Sometimes the power is output by simply rotating the chain, which can be used to lift or drag objects. Philo of Busyantium or later dubbed Philo Mechanicus a Greek engineer in 250 BC is given credit for inventing and normalizing this type of tool. on camera Although I’m sure there will be a Netflix movie in a few years saying it was really his wife’s idea. OK, As easy as the chainwheel is to set up and use... So if you are going to use a chain wheel operator be sure to go over the potential for failures associated with overhead chain wheel operated valves and take appropriate actions off camera power point1. Inventory all locations where chain wheel operated valves are located 2. Evaluate whether the metal composition, coatings and other aspects of the chain wheel operated valve’s construction are appropriate for the conditions. 3. Inspect the method used to attach the chain wheels to the valve hand 4. Review preventative and periodic maintenance procedures for chain wheel operated valves 5. Assess the suitability of working surfaces available to employees operating or working on chain wheel operated valves. On camera ok so in conclusion Chainwheel operators are designed to operate valves installed in inaccessible places. They are easily attached to the handwheel of valves ranging from 2 to 36 inches Diameter. They are very easy to install and are less expensive then a electric valve actuator, and you need to make sure you take extra safety precautions when installing do to the height of many of the valves and chance of serious injury, and with that we are done and right on time.
