what are Pipe fitting elbows

Professor Jim talks about the different type of Pipe Elbows.
The elbow or El’s are a fitting found for every class of piping. An elbow changes the direction of the run and therefore changes the flow by joining pipe at an angle.
The bend is done for Elbows in degree’s. simply enough if a elbow is 90 degrees it turns the run 90 degrees etc. the most common elbows will be 45, 90, and 180 degrees. However with the right machine shop which we have here at our IV headquarters in beautiful Compton California home of Snoop dog and NWA… we can fit the bend to whatever the need you might have.

The degrees are based on a 360 degree circle. And the degree change will depend on what your customer or end user will want for the change in the flow if the run.
There are 3 types of ells
Long radius – longer distance to make a gentler turn – most common ell, the center line radius 1 and ½ diameter of the pipe
Short radius – where the center line radius is equal to pipe diameter, used for limited spaces, has sharper curves which create a greater drop in pressure and increase stress
Long tangent – the long tangent ell have an extension on each end of the curved portion. This reduces pipe costs and puts the weld a further distance from the curve which reduces stress
Return bend or 180 elbow: is shaped like a U and is used for 2 lengths of parellel pipe. So that in turn will turn the direction of the flow. With a 180 elbow you will have an open return bend like this one… or a close return bend where the openings will be closer together making it able to go in tighter spaces
SIZING: when ordering you use the size with the pipe that it will match. 2 pieces of 2 inch pipe therefore would need a 2” 90 degree elbow.
Sizing: when you need to connect to different size pipe you would use the reducing elbow. These reducing elbows produce less turbulence and cause fewer pressure problems. They will also decrease the number of joint because you wont need a reducer or coupling to fit the smaller pipe.
When ordering the size for a reducing elbow be sure to always use the larger opening . so this would be a 2” by 1” reducing elbow.
Street elbow. A street elbow has a male end and a female end. These will also be called service ells or even fitting ells.
