What are pipe fittings. fittings overview

A fitting a is a connector that is used to join together 2 or more pipes or to stop the flow through the pipe. Every type of piping systems contains fittings. Like pipe fittings can be made of ferrous metals and non ferrous metals. Ferrous metals are those that contain iron like carbon steel, stainless steel and cast iron. Non ferrous are you bronze and aluminum. We will be concentrating on the ferrous steel fittings.

Fittings can go in horizontal or vertical pipe runs. And are used for 3 main purposes.
1. Form long straight pipe runs. (show a coupling)
2. change the direction of he runs (show a 90, 45) – there are also 22, 45 and 180 degree elbos
3. close off the ends of pipe (show a cap and a plug)
- Just like pipe, fittings also have different kinds of ends. In industrial we will usually work with threaded or screwed, socketwelded or beveled or butt welded.
- the male side of a threaded fits into the female side.. at least for now. With all the new genders we might be changing these. So thread on outside is male or (MPT) thread on inside is female or (FPT)
Term time
Run – the portion continuing in a straight line. This is usually easy on a coupling or 90 degree. But is something like a cross or tee it can get more sassy.
Branch – a tee also has branches. Which is a inlet or outlet that is not in line with the run. The inlet or outlet on this tee would be this right here.
Inlet - lets the flow join the run
Outlet – allows the flow to leave the run
Now here is where it gets sassy. The branch can be the same size as the run, but can also be smaller or larger. Here are some examples. When specifying you always start with the numbers on the run so example this would be 2 x 2 x 2, this would be 2 x 2 x 1 or reducing tee and this would be 2 x 2 x 3 which is also commonly referred to as a bull head tee.
In case of the size of the size fo the run having 2 different sizes the larger size of the run would go first. So this would be a 2 x 1 x 1
