There are 4 major types of gaskets used in the industrial world
: Those are the … Spiral wound, ring gasket, full face, and rtj gasket.
:OK, so lets go over each gasket briefly to let you understand their uses.
the Spiral wound gasket with reinforcement rings has the sealing element formed by winding two materials into thin v shaped spirals.(put on flange) Different configurations handle different flange designs, this one here is fitted for a raised face flange. The sealing action is a result of a combination of the flow of the metal and soft filler piles when the gasket is compressed
– next is this ring gasket non asbestos, we will talk about the asbestos clarification in our did you know in a minute.
– the ring gasket is made of non-asbestos. Which is a special gasket material based on aramide fibres and nitrile rubber. It has good resistance to water, gases, oils and fuels and is very cost effective. this gasket and is considered a Drop in gasket, (put on flange)meaning you slide or drop the gasket in an area where the studs have not been removed and slide it in. they can fit on flat or raised face flanges.
this full face non asbestos gasket will have an outside dimension the same as the flange,
: this will allow you to set the gasket right in line with the bolt holes, And give it a tight fit with no chance of shifting
: ring and full face gaskets can be can be made of many different materials.
Two that are popular in the plumbing world which we do carry at IV are Neoprene and the red rubber. They are used for marine and refrigerants, however not commonly used for industrial applications because of the chance of a blow out.
- the RTJ gasket or R oval iron ring are made for high pressure high temperature applications
- It is widely used in refinery, petrochemical and oil field drilling industries. And fits snuggly in the groove of the flange.

Did you know on camera– most gaskets used to be made with asbestos.
asbestos is a material that, unlike many others, can be woven. Because of this versatility, it became known in many circles as the ‘magic mineral’. In the 1960’s it was determined that the dust from asbestos was causing serious or terminal illness. DID YOU KNOW…White asbestos Because of its ability to look like snow, not to melt and to be fire-proof, was popular on film and TV sets to look like snow and was even used in the Wizard of Oz set in the poppy field scene.

: B7 studs have very high tensile strength and are generally used in high pressure & temperature environment like petroleum or chemical industry for flanges. It is generally coupled with GRADE 2H NUTS.
: The flange size will dictate the size and how many of the studs will be needed. Speaking of flanges, if a b7 stud or gasket is needed that also means that a flange is probably , so make sure to ask for the type of flange they need for the job.
