What are Pipe Flanges

Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Industrial university… where you can get your PVF degree for free….Today we are going to talk about flanges.
photo still: a flange is a projecting rim or collar on a pipe or pressure vessel used for the creation of a sealable joint with another flanged pipe or pressure vessel.
the big 4 or core 4 standards for flanges are
:ANSI/ASME the most common and what we will be working with here today, photos API for large diameter carbon steel, MSS for Steel pipeline, and AWWA for waterwork services.
ok so you know the standards now let’s take a look at the valve types. The valve types are determined by their faces. There are 6 main types of flanges that we usually deal with at Industrial Valco
those are Blind… lap joint… slip on… socket weld… threaded… and weld neck. With each type having a different purpose
The blind flange is used to close the end of the pipe.
Or to close a pipeline to insure that there will be no leakage or flow. Blind flanges can also be used to reduce the flow by having a bore or tap in the middle.
The lap joint flange has common flange dimensions
Off camera: however they only work with a lap joint stub end. They slip over the pipe and aren’t welded or fastened to it. But have freedom to swivel around the pipe helping facilitate the lining up of opposing flange bolt holes
slip on flanges are every popular in all pvf industries.
this flanges purpose is in its name, it literally just slips on the pipe. Once there it is welded with 2 fillet welds on inside and outside of flange. The disadvantage of the flange is it’s short life cycle under internal pressure compared to a weld neck.
speaking of weld neck flange. These flanges…
are easy to recognize with it’s taped hub. These flanges are machined to match the inside diameter of the pipe, so there will be no restriction of flow. this prevents turbulence and reduces erosion.
The socket weld flange utilizes a socket weld joint to attach the flange to the pipe or tube.
when assembling the joint before it’s weld, the pipe needs to be inserted to maximum depth then pulled out 1/16th of an inch to reduce residule stress. Although static strength is stronger than a slip on their can be corrosive problems.
The last of the main types of flanges is the threaded flange. This flange can be used in special circumstances.
The advantage and disadvantage is really the same for this flange, that being they can be attached without welding. It’s easy to assemble as you see here, but also is more prone to leakage, so usually used in only small sizes of pipe.
ok… before we talk about how to quote a flange we have a very special “did you know”
Did you know: on camera. since we are talk about flange-S, do you know what flangin-ING is in music?
Flanging is an audio process that combines two copies of the same signal , with the second delayed slightly, to produce a swirling effect. play video
that was some smooth flanging. Ok gang, lets get back to flanges. When quoting or ordering be sure to call out the desired flange in this order, size first, followed by weight, schedule, face, type of flange, and material.
For example So this would be a 2” - 150 -Standard- raide face, Weld Neck – a105
