Memories Of An Old Cermak Plaza, Car Spike RIP
Cermak Plaza at the corner of Harlem & Cermak is a 1950's era shopping center, one of the first in the nation. In the 1980's the owner who was now competing with a shopping center about a quarter maile away added an outdoor art gallery into the shopping mix. There was a number of sculptures and instalations many of them interactive. The most famous was the giant Car Spindle featured in Wayne's World. This work of art, by Dustin Shuler, was torn down in 2008 ironicaly enough to make room for the Walgreens who wanted to relocate in order to get a drive up window.
It has recently undergone a much needed remodeling and while we miss "the spike" it is nice to see a brand new neon sign. This little slideshow is just some old personal photos and include a couple of the other art pieces Bill Bored and the skinned Pinto.
