Killdeer and chick
As I was leaving Linda Mar to grab the 110 during one of the lowest tides of the year, some noisy killdeer in my path started complaining in their plaintive cries and acting strangely, as if perhaps they were injured. Definitely making an effort to draw my attention. Having seen this act before, where a parent will feign injury or a broken wing, I started looking around for where the chicks might be. Out of the corner of my eye I caught some movement and investigated. Killdeer chicks are like tiny fawns...they find a spot, sit down, and stay still. They say so still, in fact, that even when you're lifting their head by their beaks, they still don't break their cover. Killdeer are devoted parents, even though they don't feed their chicks like other birds do. The chicks learn to forage on their own, but that doesn't mean that mom and dad aren't looking out for them.
