Copying Saturn Devouring His Children by Peter Paul Rubens - Oil Painting

I always preferred the Rubens version of this subject to the better known Goya painting (which I think nevertheless was influenced by the Rubens, in traits like the overlong arms.)
There's a school of people who swear you can't learn anything by copying and tracing paintings and drawings, and always have something snotty to say about it. Considering I learned every useful drawing skill I have by tracing, I can vouch it is not so. (Ah, but this is also why I get on poorly with other artists. You are not friends, but rivals.)
As for oil paints, using historical paint mediums made all the difference in my ability -- for years I had struggled wondering why I couldn't get anything to look like the museum specimens. Modern tube paint proved the problem.
