The WiLDHEARTS -ROOTING FOR THE BAD GUY - GUITAR PLAYTHROUGH -

When the Wildhearts release a self titled album, with a mainly white front cover, I don't know about you but I had a feeling something pretty special was coming my way.

I was not wrong.

The album opened with an absolute barnstormer of a track 'Rooting for the bad guy' which had it all, a driving riff, a massive chorus you could scream from the top of a mountain about crucifying tweety pie and Kentucky frying the Thunderbirds...it was special, very very special.

Then something happens about half way through.

Ginger and CJ who have never been slouches on the guitars, start to veer off into some very musical territory, more like mastodons more musical moments and yet it was very much them.

The guitars are predominantly one take stuff, one player a side in the mix, which is the sign of incredible confidence, knowing they had nailed everything they need in their performance without overdubbing. It made them sound live on a record and for anyone who has seen them live, this is not just exciting but arousing.

Add in Mr Scott Sorry, the young blood, the lover of riffs and faster songs and a shot in the arm for the whole group and the cocktail is already looking potent enough to kill a god.

But you must never forget that the drums are handled by Rich Battersby, to my estimation not just the finest drummer to ever take the stool in the band but in his profession. He is unshakeable.

Ginger: 'right Richy, this song is 9 minutes, fast, changes all over the place and I want every little change accented...'

Rich: 'Cool, lets go...'

F**k sake, it gets me on edge just thinking about it.

This is the Wildhearts as a creative and insanely well oiled machine, Ginger reminding everyone he may not want to be seen as a great guitarist but he very much is. CJ being every bit his equal with some really disciplined chord work and just listen to how he cleans up his crunch to arperggiate some chords that fit to perfection. This song really is astonishing.

I've made a playthrough as a request by Jamie but also because I wanted to have a crack at it, I started working it out this morning and had a go at the solo. I couldn't sit and agonise over it, I think it's in the ballpark and wanted to go for the feel Ginger got rather than fully mimic it. So be kind!
