GUITAR PLAYTHROUGH - FRIEND FOR FIVE MINUTES

The Just in Lust single was the only Wildhearts to release to feature Mark Keds on guitar. The irony not being lost on me that he was only in the band for 5 minutes, playing on a song that is exactly 5 minutes, about being a friend for 5 minutes...

...Ginger breaking some 4th wall songwriting right there, as if he wasn't already in the God Tier of songwriting as it was by this point in his career.

The performance on this track always intrigued me, Ginger seeming to be more intent on big swathes of splashy guitar, adding extra dissonant notes to chords to fit the vocal melody he needed while still managing to have an absolutely ferocious salvo at the beginning that could have easily been on a helmet record...

All driven by the gifted and often overlooked drumming prowess of Mr Ritch Battersby, a man who in my eyes was pound for pound the finest drummer of his generation. I'm not just saying that because he was in the Wildhearts but because he has all the skills I would ever look for in a drummer myself and then, even more, up his sleeve.

You could throw any musical idea at him, at any point in the song and he won't just make it work, he will make it seem like it was always meant to work. This isn't speculation, Ginger has literally done this to him throughout the bands' entire career!

I love this song, quirky, kind of sad but uplifting, like a beautiful life wrapped up in barbed razor wire.

I had a crack at the middle bit but with 3 guitar tracks all noodling away, I tried to find a happy medium for the purposes of the video.

Anyway, hope you enjoy, I'm gonna crack a beer and get to work on another one...I'm in the mood.
