1 Soldier Was Awarded The Medal Of Honor While Everyone Assumed He Was Dead

In September 1943, near Altavilla, Italy, Private William Crawford single-handedly attacked and destroyed two German machine gun positions using grenades, an action his unit believed had cost him his life since he was never seen again after the assault. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1944, with his father accepting it on his behalf since Crawford was presumed dead. In reality, Crawford had survived as a German prisoner of war and was freed in 1945, but he quietly returned home without ever mentioning his medal to most people around him. For years he worked as a school janitor, and it was only decades later, in the 1970s, that his story was widely rediscovered.
