Charleston: Edison Bell Dance Orchestra; HMV Monarch Gramophone 1909

Here is my lovely HMV Mahogany Spear-tip Horn Gramophone C1909 playing Charleston on Edison Bell Winner 4297 by the Edison Bell Dance orchestra....or is it?

Not listed in Rust/Forbes there is a gap by the matrix 9506. I've taken the recording date in the absence of any other info as July 1926. The only matrix on the record is 9506F and I've been unable to find out anything else about this from any publications.

Corresponding with another collector on YouTube, the opinion is that this is a British Band as it doesn't swing like a US band. Also if you listen to the early part of the first chorus, the strings in particular are struggling with the Charleston syncopation and are a bit early on the beat. As it goes on they all get a bit better at it!

The flip side is Mamie by the Regent Band, not listed at all in RF and is clearly an american band but again I've got no other info.

Some notes on the sleeve by the previous owner questioned whether the origin of these sides was Gennett but again no other info.

Judging by the lack of info I think this is quite a rare disc...your comments and opinions would be welcome!

Please subscribe to this channel to see more info on the machine and see others in the collection.

Thanks for viewing and enjoy the roaring(ish) jazz from the 1920's!
