Harry Bidgood and his Broadcasters play Roll Away Clouds October 1928 HMV Gramophone
Here is another rescue record from a box kindly donated to me recently.
This is Harry Bidgood and his Broadcasters playing Roll Away Clouds on Broadcast 308–B dating from October 1928 .This was from a show called Virginia which must have been quite popular at the time because a number of Dance Bands issued records of music from the show.
I don’t have many of these small Broadcast records but I’m surprised how well they play once they've been buffed up. These small records were made for Woolworths by the Vocalion Gramophone Company which in the end became, if not already was, part of Crystallate and ultimately ended up under the Decca umbrella.
I’m playing this on my mahogany spear tip Monarch HMV gramophone and I’m using a soft tone needle in the sound box as the grooves on these little records are a bit narrower than the norm.
Nevertheless I think the sound quality is really very good especially for 1928 and were certainly far superior to the up-and-coming Decca pressings of the 1929 to 33 period! It took Decca quite some time to improve their recording techniques and poor playing surfaces.
More details on this machine can be found on my other clips. Thanks for viewing and if you can please like and subscribe.
