Perophone Pixie Grippa Portable Gramophone c1926

Here we have my Perophone Pixie Grippa Portable Gramophone which dates from around 1926.

These were manufactured by the Vernon Lockwood Company who used the brand-name Perophone for many of their gramophones.

This machine is fairly unique in as much that it is in probably in as mint and complete condition as you could possibly find.

It’s in the red leather effect finish. These machines were available in a number of colours: Brown, Black both plain and leather effect and plain polished wood. This machine also has its original instruction label on the turntable telling you how to speed it up slow it down and start and stop. Brilliantly designed, these could play all sizes of records up to 12 inch by sliding the turntable forwards to allow the necessary clearance. It also has a full size motor which is very efficient.

Regrettably, these machines were manufactured with the tonearm and soundbox being made from pot metal which becomes incredibly fragile with age, and it is very rare to see any of these machines without any sort of damage to these parts. Usually you see bits, glued together or cracking and crazing of the metal. This machine, however, has no damage to the metalwork whatsoever rather incredibly, the only small issue being the joint in the tone arm is a little stiff which is due to the swelling of the metal. The sound box could possibly do with a little bit of a tuneup, but due to the fragile nature of the metal (It will probably disintegrate), I’m leaving well alone as it’s in such good condition and plays really quite well for a machine of such small proportions. Additionally very often the small horn goes missing and these are difficult to replace.

Everything packs away inside the box, very ingeniously, and this makes for a most interesting and collectible model.
