1996年に登場した駆動方式がMRのオープン2シーターであり、名前の由来は水平対向エンジンを表す「ボクサー」（Boxer）と、オープンカーを表す「ロードスター」（Roadster）を掛け合わせた造語である。

2代目である987型は2004年にデビューし、2005年にはドイツの国際的第三者試験認証機関によって、故障率が最も少ない車として認定された。

サスペンションは、前後ともにマクファーソンストラット式で18インチと大径化されたホイールを履き、新設計の6速マニュアルトランスミッションが搭載される。
ソフトトップの開閉はわずか12秒で、50km/hであれば走行中の開閉が可能である。

標準装備されたPSMは、走行中に危険な状況になった場合に車の姿勢を安定させるシステムで、コンピュータが自動車の進行方向、車速、ヨーレート、横Gなどを常に計測し、オーバーステアもしくはアンダーステアが発生すると、4輪個別にブレーキをかけて本来の走行ラインに戻すように作用する。

搭載される水平対向6気筒24バルブエンジンは、3179ccの排気量から、最高出力280ps(206kW)/6200rpm、最大トルク32.6kg・m(320N・m)/4700～6000rpmを発揮した。

A computer constantly measures the vehicle's direction of travel, vehicle speed, yaw rate, lateral G, etc., and detects oversteer or understeer. When this occurs, the brakes are applied to each of the four wheels to restore the original running line.

The horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder 24-valve engine, with a displacement of 3179cc, demonstrated a maximum output of 280ps (206kW)/6200rpm and a maximum torque of 32.6kg・m (320N・m)/4700-6000rpm.
