Soldier Who Volunteered to go to Auschwitz

Who would willingly go to a Concentration Camp? One soldier actually volunteered.
In 1940, there were already rumors of what was happening in Auschwitz but the Polish resistance needed someone on the inside to get the story out to the world about what was happening there. That’s when Captain Witold Pilecki stepped forward.
During the round-up of several thousand Jews in Warsaw that September afternoon, Pilecki stepped into the line of detainees being sent to Auschwitz and spent the next three years documenting what he saw.
In April 1943, Pilecki, along with several others, made their escape from the camp. They were then able to successfully smuggle out of Poland his years of reports that the Polish government in exile compiled into the Pilecki Report, confirming to the world that, without a doubt, Auschwitz was real and the horrors there were worse than anyone could imagine.
