Indiana Harbor - Leaving Safe Harbor for Stormy Superior

Here is the Indiana Harbor seen departing Superior, Wisconsin on the evening of May 19, 2022. She had just picked up a load of iron ore pellets (taconite) from the Burlington Northern dock and was bound to deliver her cargo to Gary, Indiana. The footage starts slightly a little after the Indiana Harbor had backed away from the dock. She then turns and lines up with the Superior entry before departing onto the dark waters of Lake Superior.

The calm morning the Indiana Harbor saw during her arrival had built up into a windy evening, with Lake Superior's waves starting to mount from the east. There was also a foggy mist just above the waves, causing the Indiana Harbor to utilize her spotlights to ensure she safely made her way through the canal. While conditions weren't severe enough to stop the Indiana Harbor from departing, there must always be a slight pause in one's thoughts as a big boat takes on a great lake, especially on a windy night.

The Indiana Harbor used to be a fairly regular sight on my channel a few years ago, but it seems like I only catch her occasionally these days. She often loads at Two Harbors now, so I'm not always able to visit her there... or her schedule and mine simply don't align. While every 1000-foot ship is impressive to see in person, the silhouette of the Indiana Harbor departing Superior made for an even more impressive sight. The experience doesn't fully translate to the footage I captured, but hopefully some of the essence of the moment still comes through.

The 1000-foot Indiana Harbor was launched in March 1979, making her the ninth 1000-footer on the Great Lakes (out of 13 total). She is powered by four GM V-20-cylinder 3,500 horsepower diesel engines, giving her a service speed of 14 knots. Her seven cargo holds are accessed by 37 hatch covers. She has a maximum cargo capacity of 80,900 tons. Her self-unloading system consists of a loop conveyor that carries cargo up her 250-foot self-unloading boom. She can discharge up to 10,000 tons per hour. She sails for the American Steamship Company.
