Indiana Harbor - Glowing Under Superior’s Skies

NOTE: For the month of March, I will be uploading footage I recorded during the 2022-2023 shipping season but haven't previously posted. Early in the shipping season, I made the decision to reserve some video clips so we would all have something to enjoy during the off-season while we wait for ships to return to action. Here is the Indiana Harbor making a visit to Superior, Wisconsin on the morning of May 19, 2022 to pick up 63,000 tons of taconite from the Burlington Northern #5 dock. The taconite was scheduled to be delivered to the steel mill at Gary, Indiana.

This was a calm and peaceful morning in the Twin Ports, one that saw two massive 1000-footers (and fleet mates) arrive at both entries of the harbor. On the Duluth side was the American Integrity, whose arrival was featured previously on this channel. I then raced over to the Superior side to see the Indiana Harbor... where the morning skies were still stunning with their colors. I think it's worth checking out, but then I might be a little biased!

The 1000-foot Indiana Harbor was launched in March 1979, making her the ninth 1000-footer on the Great Lakes (out of 13 total). She is powered by four GM V-20-cylinder 3,500 horsepower diesel engines, giving her a service speed of 14 knots. Her seven cargo holds are accessed by 37 hatch covers. She has a maximum cargo capacity of 80,900 tons. Her self-unloading system consists of a loop conveyor that carries cargo up to her 250-foot self-unloading boom. She can discharge up to 10,000 tons per hour. She sails for the American Steamship Company.
