Burns Harbor - A Rare Visit to Duluth

Here is the Burns Harbor arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on the morning of July 12, 2022. She was in town to load taconite at the Canadian National dock in West Duluth, with delivery scheduled for Indiana Harbor. As she made her way through the Duluth shipping canal, the Burns Harbor traded captain's salutes with the Aerial Lift Bridge.

The Burns Harbor is a rare visitor to Duluth, as she most often loads at the Burlington Northern dock in Superior... with the occasional visits to Two Harbors. She can sometimes go a few years without any Duluth visits. Having said that, she did make a Duluth visit in April of this year, which I covered in a previous video. For that visit, she came in with a bow covered in ice... what a difference only three months make!

The 1000-foot Burns Harbor was launched in 1979 and made her maiden voyage in 1980, making her the tenth of the thirteen 1000-footers to enter service. She is powered by four GM Electro-Motive 20-645-E7 3,600 b.h.p. (2,648 kW) two-stroke cycle, single-acting V-20 cylinder diesel engines burning marine diesel oil. Her cargo capacity is 80,900 tons, held in seven cargo holds that are accessed by 37 deck hatches. Her 250-foot self-unloading boom can discharge up to 9,000 tons of iron ore an hour.
