CSL Tadoussac - Making Port Under Menacing Skies

Here is the CSL Tadoussac arriving in Superior, Wisconsin on the afternoon of August 2, 2022. She was arriving to load taconite pellets at the Burlington Northern 5 dock and then scheduled to deliver the load to Stelco’s Lake Erie Works at Nanticoke. The dark skies we saw in my previous video of the Erie Trader continued to look ominous for the Tadoussac's arrival. While filming her arrival, I saw a lightning strike in the direction of Two Harbors, but unfortunately it was out of the frame of my camera. Viewers of this channel might remember my previous Tadoussac video from Superior, where a storm blew in just as she arrived between the piers, threatening to blow her into the south pier. That arrival may have been on their mind when the Tadoussac called the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge to log in their entry. (While ships at the Superior entry do not have to pass under a lift bridge, they still call in their arrival the Aerial Lift Bridge on the Duluth side, so their arrival and departure times can be recorded.) Fortunately, the storm passed to the north for this arrival and the Tadoussac was able to arrive at BN5 without any incident.

While we did not get a salute from the CSL Tadoussac on this visit, we did get to hear her horns bark out five short blasts to a nearby sailboat that was threatening to get in the Tadoussac's path. The sailboat stayed out of the way, though for a while it looked like they had their hands full with some of the waves that were building outside of the piers. The Tadoussac was eventually able to establish radio contact with the sailboat and confirm that they would stay clear of the entry until the Tadoussac passed. (I didn't include that radio chatter in this video because the scanner only recorded the Tadoussac's portion of the conversation.)

The 730-foot CSL Tadoussac was launched in 1969 and is powered by a single 6-cylinder 9,600 b.h.p. Sulzer model 6RND76 diesel engine. She was the last laker built for Canada Steamship Lines with the classic forward-mounted pilot house and is one of only two classic-style lakers still sailing for CSL today (with the other being the Frontenac). In the year 2000, the Tadoussac's center section was rebuilt and widened, along with a rebuild of her self-unloading system. This rebuild gave her a "bulge" in the hull close to the waterline. The rebuilt unloading system featured a covered single tunnel belt, remotely operated gates, and a comprehensive dust suppression system. She currently has a the capacity to haul 30,051 tons of ore at a mid-summer draft of 28 feet 3 inches.
