Hon. James L. Oberstar - Dodging the Shadows in Duluth

NOTE: For the month of March, I will be uploading footage I recorded during the 2022-2023 shipping season but haven't previously posted. Early in the shipping season, I made the decision to reserve some video clips so we would all have something to enjoy during the off-season while we wait for ships to return to action. If you haven't seen it already, I recently posted my video showing the highlights of the 2022-2023 shipping season. It can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/WI55UjblOZA

Here is the Hon. James L. Oberstar arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on the evening of June 26, 2022. She was coming in with a split load of limestone and dolomite picked up at the ports of Stoneport and Meldrum Bay in Michigan. The rock cargo was to be discharged at the Hallett #5 dock in West Duluth, after which the Oberstar would depart empty and make her way to Marquette, Michigan to load taconite pellets.

The early evening lighting was stunning on the Oberstar as she approach the Duluth piers, but unfortunately the sun ducked behind the clouds right before the Oberstar made her way through the shipping canal. I caught up with her again at Rice's Point... where the sun had come out again, but was so low above the horizon that she was moving in and out of shadows along the way. When the sun does hit her, she takes on a nice glow that gives her the appearance of a fresh copper penny. Even if the lighting was perfect throughout this video, it's always a pleasure to hear her blast a captain's salute on arrival... so hopefully this video is still a worthwhile watch.

The 806-foot Hon. James L. Oberstar started service in 1959, originally named the Shenango II. From 1967 to 2011, she was named the Charles M. Beeghly as she sailed for Interlake Steamship. In 2011, she was named in honor of the former Congressman from Minnesota who supported Great Lakes shipping and the maritime industry in general. In 2008, her steam turbine was replaced with two Rolls-Royce Marine Bergen 6-cylinder B32:40L6P diesel engines each rated at 4,079 b.h.p. A scrubbing system is in place to remove particulates and pollutants from her exhaust. She can carry up to 31,000 tons of cargo in her five cargo holds. Those holds are accessed by 25 hatches. A gravity-fed conveyor system allows her to unload her own cargo, using a 250-foot unloading boom.
