Manitoulin - A Loud Return to Superior
Here is the Manitoulin seen arriving in Superior, Wisconsin on the afternoon of September 6, 2022. She was due for loading taconite at the Burlington Northern #5 dock. We previously saw the Manitoulin a little earlier in the year departing the same dock. On that visit she departed without sounding a salute. As such, I was prepared for no salute for this arrival. But I think there were just enough people on the pier in Superior that she sounded a nice captain's salute for us. It's always a pleasant surprise to hear a salute in Superior, especially from a Canadian ship... as they are not always known for saluting.
The Manitoulin has made several trips to Superior and Two Harbors this year, taking on some of the taconite hauling duties that we've usually seen from her fleet mate, the Michipicoten. The Michipicoten still makes occasional runs too, but far fewer than we've seen in previous years. It's nice to see a variety of ships, however, so there are no complaints here.
The 663-foot Manitoulin is the result of combining two different ship sections together. The stern section was built in 1991 in Croatia and sailed as the Danish saltwater chemical tanker Lalandia Swan. The self-unloading bow section was newly built in 2014-2015 and mated with the Lalandia Swan's stern to form the laker you see today. The Manitoulin went into service in late 2015. She has a cargo capacity of 27,550 tons and is powered by a 8,100 bhp 5-cylinder B&W 5L50MC diesel engine, giving her a top speed of 16.5 mph. She sails today for Lower Lakes Towing Ltd.
