Sprinklers

[Neck & Mid Back Mobility Advice]

If you are looking for thoracic mobility exercises and you haven’t tried sprinklers yet, you are in the right place. I love sprinklers for MANY reasons, one of them being it can improve thoracic rotation mobility, but also more. Here’s why ⤵️

1️⃣ Dissociation - unlike other thoracic mobility exercises, you have to work a bit harder with sprinklers to limit unwanted motion elsewhere in the body. A couple areas I give extra attention to are the head/neck and the pelvis ➡️ the goal is the keep both of these areas still, facing forward. This can help to own the mobility!

2️⃣ Shoulder blade awareness and shoulder health - sprinklers are executed by performing reciprocal scapular protraction and retraction. The side with the hand on the back of the head is performing scapular retraction while the opposite side is simultaneously performing scapular protraction. This promotes thoracic rotation! Having better control of your shoulder blades and adequate thoracic mobility can promote better shoulder health.

3️⃣ Neck health - the area between the thoracic spine and cervical spine is called the cerivothoracic junction (CTJ). There is another junction between the thoracic and lumbar spine, and these areas tend to be more stiff as the curvature of the spine changes from one angle to the other. When performing sprinklers correctly, you actually promote motion at this junction as the cervical spine is now in relative rotation compared to the trunk.
