In the fight for her life, dancer credits ballet in overcoming 'the perfect storm'

When 20-year-old Gianna Forte dances, it’s obvious her body moves unlike any other. But medically speaking, her body truly is unique. That’s because Gianna was born with an omphalocele, meaning her abdominal organs were on the outside of her body. Thanks to medical advancements, Yale and a little luck, the only difference between her and other children was that she had no belly button.

Despite coming into the world with a different body, Gianna loved to move it more than most. As she learned to walk, she began to dance, which lead her at 20 years old to become a member of The Washington Ballet’s highest-level school, the Professional Training Program. Like many ballet dancers, she tore her labrum she required a minimal surgery. Following surgery, it was obvious something was wrong. Gianna could not stop vomiting.

What continued was five surgeries, sepsis and pneumonia in the fight for Gianna’s life. But when the doctor gave her specific instructions, she knew through her training as a ballet dancer, she could overcome.
