Little girl finds role model in dancer with same rare birth defect

A fleet of the ballet dancers huddle together, staring in to a crowded room through a slightly cracked door. In comparison to the active audience awaiting them, the dancers are eerily silent. The only noise comes from the material of the detailed gowns’ swaying as they adjust their footing in anticipation. Suddenly, they spring into action making their way center stage.

This Washington Ballet’s Fall Showcase is one of the many performances these ballet students participate in. But to dancer Gianna Forte, this performance is special. It’s her first time back to the stage after fighting for her life.

Twenty years ago Gianna was born with an omphalocele. The condition causes an unborn child’s abdominal organs to grow on the outside of their body. But in March of 2018, a typical dancer injury became the perfect storm. Doctors were concerned for her life, but Gianna’s strength never wavered.

Today, she is sharing that strength by inspiring others, like Kenzie, a nine-year-old who caught wind of Gianna’s story and new she had to meet the powerful dancer who shared the same rare birth defect.
