Nearly seven years ago, Cynthia Dawson faced every parent’s worst nightmare: the loss of a child. Her 5-year-old daughter, Ava, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) a rare and terminal brain tumor. Once diagnosed, Cynthia said children with DIPG typically only live nine months to a year. But Cynthia wasn’t going to give up hope.

Months of doctor’s appointments and clinical trials ensued, but when Ava’s condition took a turn for the worse, Cynthia knew they had to make their remaining time special. That’s why she booked a photo shoot for Ava. But with the burden of medical bills and the price of traveling from their home in Texas to treatment in Arizona, their family had to find a photographer to donate their time and skill.

Ava’s magical photoshoot was complete with a pink dress, crown and lots of glitter. Seeing her daughter giggling and singing for the photographer was an experience Cynthia will never forget. Ava passed away just one month later.

While Ava’s photographs provide a moment captured in time that Cynthia will forever treasure, they also planted a seed. Cynthia realized that other families with children battling cancer could have the same need hers did. That’s why she and her photographer teamed up to create The Gold Hope Project, a non-profit organization that pairs photographers with children battling cancer for free photography sessions. According to Cynthia, the photo sessions also give photographers a once in a lifetime experience and open their eyes to how important their line of work is.

As the Gold Hope Project continues to grow and give, Cynthia remembers her daughter and hopes she would be proud.
