He lost his job but found new sense of purpose helping homeless friend

When Reed lost his job during the recession, he saw it as a chance to give back. He began a personal service project which he called “The Year of Giving,” gifting a stranger $10 a day each day for a year. Through his project, he met Anthony, who had been homeless for 15 years. The two struck up an unlikely friendship.

One day, when Reed found Anthony sleeping outside in subzero temperatures, he felt an obligation to do something more for his friend. He decided to help Anthony find housing. After months of work, Anthony finally got an apartment of his own.

But by the end of his Year of Giving, Reed still felt like there was more he could do for some of the other homeless people like Anthony he had gotten to know through his project. He started a greeting card company called Second Story Cards to help empower them to do meaningful work and make a living.

Today, the Second Story Cards team works to bring dignity and hope to people experiencing homelessness everywhere, and Reed and Anthony remain lifelong friends.
