Eric H. Thiman: London Bridge is broken down

Phillip Sear plays the second of a set of four pieces from 1932 entitled 'New tunes to old rhymes' by the British composer Eric Thiman (1900-75).

Eric Thiman (1900-75) had a distinguished career as academic, choral director and organist, and is best known today for his songs, organ and choral music - particularly his church anthems, which are still in regular use. The fascinating set from which this piece comes is almost a contradiction in terms - it contains four wordless arrangements of tunes that Thiman wrote to fit well-known British nursery songs. This one fits the following words (I only quote the first verse - the full version shown in Wikipedia ( http://bit.ly/2xNSdKQ ) has 12 verses!):

'London Bridge is broken down,
Broken down, broken down.
London Bridge is broken down,
My fair lady.'

It is perhaps more familiar in a single verse form with the word 'broken' replaced by 'falling'. The thumbnail shows Samuel Scott's picture of London Bridge as it was in 1753.
