Igor Parfyonov: March (In the Woods in Spring)
Phillip Sear plays the third piece - МАРТ. В лесу весной - from the 2008 'House in Klin' (Домик в Клину) collection, by the Russian composer Igor Parfyonov (1928- 2018).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Igor Parfyonov (or Parfionov, 1928- 2018) was a Russian composer who specialized in educational music, following a religious experience inspired by an icon he had viewed at the age of 36. The 'House in Klin' collection (which includes a piece for each month of the year) was inspired by a 1988 visit to Tchaikovsky's house in Klin. Per Wikipedia "[what is now the] Tchaikovsky House-Museum was the country home in Klin, 85 kilometers northwest of Moscow where Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky lived from May 1892 until his death in 1893". The collection was published in 2008, but I think it was written in the 1990s. It is dedicated to the composer's mother.
This piece is headed by a quotation from a Tchaikovsky letter to one of his brothers, which translates very approximately as: "I'm waiting for spring. And now the enchantress has appeared. The forest cast off its shroud and is preparing a shadow for us. And the rivers have flowed, and the grove has become resplendent. And at last the long-desired day has come!" (Russian original: "Я жду весны. И вот волшебница явилась, Свой саван сбросил лес и нам готовит тень, И реки потекли, и роща огласилась, И наконец настал давно желанный день!".
