Daniël van Goens: Gavotte "Irda", Op. 13

Phillip Sear plays a short piano piece from 1893 by the Dutch-born cellist and composer Daniël van Goens (1858-1904).

Daniël van Goens was born in Leiden, but his family moved to Montpellier and Lausanne early in his life, and he studied and made his career in France, where he was a celebrated performer. He suffered from ill health in his last 30 years, which limited his performing. His music - nearly all of it for cello - is still played today, in particular the Scherzo, Op. 12 (which I have accompanied). He wrote a couple of piano pieces, including this gavotte (which also exists in cello and string quartet versions). It was dedicated to the biologist (or maybe chest expert - there were two notable doctors with the same name, or maybe they were the same person) Dr. Oscar Larcher. I'm not sure who Irda was.
