Giovanni Rinaldi: Novelletta, Op.27

Phillip Sear plays a 'novellette' from 1870 by the Italian pianist and composer Giovanni Rinaldi (1840-95).

Although his own music seems to be unjustly forgotten, Rinaldi's musical immortality is assured through his being the maternal grandfather of the celebrated 20th century composer Nino Rota (1911-79). Rota was named after his grandfather, and was a big fan of his music.

Rinaldi was born in Reggiolo, Reggio Emilia, but moved to Genoa, and was apparently known as the 'Italian Chopin'. He only wrote piano music, which is overdue for revival as all that I have seen is imaginative and well-written.

As most canny composers of his day did, Rinaldi liked to keep good relationships with his publishers, and this piece is dedicated to his friend Luigi Erba, who was Giulio Ricordi's brother-in-law, and involved in the music publishing business. Like Rinaldi, Erba had a famous grandson: the Italian film director Luchino Visconti (1906-76).
