James H. Rogers: L'oiseau qui chante dans le jardin
#8 from 'Scènes de bal' (1899)
------------------------------------------------------
Phillip Sear plays a tranquil piece—'the bird that sings in the garden'—from a set of nine 'esquisses' (sketches) by the American organist and composer James Hotchkiss Rogers (1857–1940).
------------------------------------------------------
Rogers began his musical studies in Chicago, but like most American musicians at the time, set off for Europe to complete his studies—in Berlin and Paris (where he studied with Widor and Guilmant). He spent most of his career in Cleveland, Ohio, where he had organist and teaching posts. He was a prolific composer of liturgical music, and also songs. You can read more about him here: https://tinyurl.com/y6xaslso .
'Scènes de bal' was dedicated to the composer's sister Harriet Clara Rogers (1862–1942). I guess the French titling (the title page is all in French) gave this American publication an aura of sophistication! Maybe Rogers (or his sister) had big hands, because the left hand accompanying chords would undoubtedly be better played unarpeggiated (which I can't quite do!). I'm not sure how this piece fits into the 'ball' theme of the set!
