Albert Ketèlbey: The Phantom Melody
Phillip Sear plays the published piano solo version of a 1911 (published 1912) cello piece by the British composer Albert Ketèlbey (1875–1959).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Albert Ketèlbey was one of the best-known British light music composers, and is still remembered for such works as 'In a Monastery Garden' and 'In a Persian Market'. He wrote some piano music under the pseudonym Anton Vodorinski.
This piece has a fascinating history: it was the prize-winning entry in a competition run by 'Tit-Bits' magazine to find a companion cello piece to the famous 'Broken Melody' by the cellist and composer Auguste van Biene. The prize was £50 (over £7,000 in 2024 terms!), and van Biene apparently played it at all his engagements. You can read more here: https://tinyl.io/BUAL . As well as the cello and solo piano versions, the piece was published in a version for violin and piano. If you would like to hear the 'Broken Melody' there is my old video recording of Tony Lowry's arrangement here: https://youtu.be/8yte6LYiqLA - and the video description gives more information about van Biene.
