Manlio di Veroli: Valse langoureuse
Phillip Sear plays the subtle fourth piece from 'Album lyrique' (1919) by the Italian pianist, organist, conductor, and composer Manlio di Veroli (1888–1960).
--------------------------------------------
Di Veroli was born in Rome in 1888 and began studying piano at age 8. He later attended the conservatory of S. Cecilia, where he studied piano (with Sgambati), organ, and composition, finally graduating in 1911. That year, he immigrated to London to take up a post at the London Opera House. Although he had composed some large-scale works in Italy, he is remembered today for the works he wrote and published in London—in particular, Italian songs that were taken up by Beniamino Gigli, and other well-known singers of the day. Other works included an operetta 'White Wings' (1925), three cello sonatas, piano suites and a string quartet. As well as composing, he worked in London as a conductor and pianist and also taught. You can read more about him here: t.ly/D_lHO
The spare piano writing in this piece and the highly contrasting middle section give this piece a very 'modern' feel for its era.
