. The Great Ray Charles was released in August 1957. It's an instrumental jazz album. This is a sealed copy of a 2010 reissue from Rhino. It emulates the original and is considered to be of high audio quality.

The Great Ray Charles was Ray's second LP, but his first recorded *as* an LP. (The album Ray Charles, also from 1957, had been a compilation of earlier singles.) Quincy Jones helped with arrangements, and wrote "The Ray", which opens the album.

The inner sleeve is translucent plastic. The green label closely emulates the original 1957 US pressing (shown here). This Rhino reissue is pressed onto thick 1980-gram vinyl. It's heavy!

No singles were released from The Great Ray Charles -- at the time. But in 1960, Atlantic issued two of the LP's songs on singles: "Doodlin'" (A/B split) and "Sweet Sixteen Bars" (b/w "Tell the Truth").

In 1957, Ray was already famous for his raucous R&B singles. This unexpected hip jazz LP must have shocked more than a few fans. It remains a classic jazz record, the first of several that Ray would release over the years.
