Ray Charles Robinson was born in Georgia in 1930, and grew up in Florida. His life was marked by poverty but also by music. Several key events led to his unique and difficult biography: his father abandoned the family; he witnessed his brother George drown when he was six; he lost his eyesight around the same time due to a medical condition; and at 14, while away at a school for the blind, his beloved mother died.

He poured his heartache, troubles, redemptions, humor, and transcendence into his music from his earliest recordings. He became a well-known star in the 1950s, and an international superstar in the 1960s. His career was built on legendary live performances and near-yearly LP releases. His music touched on R&B, orchestral standards, instrumental jazz, and country.

Ray Charles is widely known as "The Genius", and countless compilations continue to be assembled focusing on his many classic songs. However, these compilations tend to repeat the same twenty or thirty selections over and over, and are made up exclusively of songs from the early part of his career. They're excellent of course, but unbalanced and don't tell the true story of Ray Charles.

That's why in this list of Ray's Top Fifty Albums, everything is included, even the lesser-known LPs that time has forgotten. Each of his albums contains classic tracks, and this list is an exploration of his music in a fair-minded and even-handed way.
