Hosted on March 7, 2022, and moderated by Dr. Michael Gomez, Global Africa’s Quest for Freedom/Liberation in the Modern Period, featured Dr. Nemata Blyden, Dr. Monique Bedasse, and Dr. Ben Talton as panelists. The event was a critical discussion of the various genealogies that constitute an African diaspora studies canon; works that would need to be included in an edited volume on the topic. The panelists elaborated on the activist and movement origins of the field, as well as the crucial contributions of scholars and other writers around the world including Africa and the Caribbean. They discussed key interventions in the field, as well as distinguished between concepts like pan-africanism, black internationalism, and African diaspora. The panelists also discussed the role of ancient Africa and antiquity in shaping contemporary imaginations about African diasporic culture and identity. Ultimately, they concluded that African diaspora studies is an intellectual and political tradition firmly rooted in the relationship between Africa and African-descended people around the globe.
