From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-first Century
Dr. William A. Darity Jr.
Mrs. A. Kirsten Mullen
Hosted on September 22, 2022, and moderated by Dr. Michael Gomez, From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-first Century, featured Professor A. Kirsten Mullen and Dr. William A. Darity Jr. as panelists. The event was a critical discussion of reparations for U.S. slavery, the Jim Crow era, and ongoing white terrorism in the contemporary moment. The panelists discussed the case for seeking reparations for these harms from the federal government of the United States, in particular. They also engaged the moderator in a critical dialogue about models of wealth redistribution and eligibility for these reparations were restitution to be paid out. The panelists and moderator also discussed the rationale and limitations of reducing eligibility to black persons of African descent who can provide evidence of an ancestor being enslaved in the United States. They conclude by acknowledging the need to support African-descended people receiving reparations from multiple empires such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States.
