The 1619 Project Critical Race Theory, and the Challenge of Teaching the African American Experience
Hosted by NYU Department of History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, and The Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora (CSAAD).
Hosted on October 9, 2021, The 1619 Project, Critical Race Theory, and the Challenge of Teaching the African American Experience, featured a talk by Dr. Michael Gomez. In his presentation, Dr. Gomez contextualized the historical emergence and development of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and the 1619 Project, respectively. By engaging critiques of colorblindness and calls for reparations advanced by Nicole Hannah Jones, Derrick Bell, Kimberley Crenshaw, and Richard Delgado, Dr. Gomez charts the relationship between these intellectual projects and broader social justice movements. At the same token, he attends to the limitations of these works insofar as accounting for global perspectives and movements of the Black peoples in the Americas, Caribbean and Africa. Ultimately, he champions both projects for fostering crucial debates, despite recent controversies.
