Names of People from Italian Cities 🇮🇹 [Italian for Beginners]
People in Italy identify themselves first with their city, then with their region and only at the end, as Italian!
Before the unification of 1861, Italy was a patchwork of many different states, each one with its own culture, language, food, and traditions. This is how Italians still identify themselves: first and foremost as a citizen of their province or region.
Many people still speak their dialect with friends and family which may vary between neighbouring towns. Here are some of the names that people from different towns have:
A “genovese” is someone from Genova
A “milanese” is someone from Milano
A “fiorentino” is someone from Firenze
A “napoletano” is someone from Napoli
A “palermitano” is someone from Palermo
A “ravennate” is someone from Ravenna
A “romano” is someone from Rome
A “bolognese” is someone from Bologna
A “parmigiani” is someone from Parma
A “veneziano” is someone from Venezia
A “barese” is someone from Bari
A “cagliaritani ” is someone from Cagliari
