The superhero of Bologna: The ‘umarell’

Can you imagine getting paid just for watching construction works? That’s what happens in Bologna!

There is a lucky set of “workers” who are called “umarell” (literally: little man), a word that comes from the dialect of Bologna, but today is part of the Italian language.

These umarell are usually elderly pensioners, who spend their time watching workmen at construction sites, usually peeping over walls or spying through cracks with their hands behind their back. Often, they even give suggestions and even criticize the workers.!

The town of Riccione in Emilia-Romagna actually grants a salary to the local umarell in order to oversee construction works when they are unguarded. This keeps thieves away and gives these mature citizens the possibility to meet with friends and not get bored at home.
