Shaft in Africa (1973) - Cult Film Index Review

Directed by John Guillermin, a British director later known for The Towering Inferno (1974) and King Kong (1976), replacing series originator Gordon Parks. Richard Roundtree’s third outing as John Shaft takes him undercover to bust a modern slavery ring operating out of Ethiopia and Paris, run by villain Amafi (Frank Finlay), smuggling young Africans into France for chain-gang labour, with Vonetta McGee as his love interest Aleme. More action, more locations, and more Shaft, though critics noted the film's deliberate pivot toward James Bond territory, complete with gadgets, international settings, and a tuxedo-and-spear aesthetic that felt like a conscious rebranding of the character, armed with a spear and still cooler than ice.
