Magic Crystal (1986) - Cult Film Index Review

Peak 80s Hong Kong cinema didn't just mix genres, it smashed them together and hit "go," and Magic Crystal (1986) is that philosophy in full effect. Written and directed solely by Wong Jing, who also cast himself as Pancho, Andy's hapless assistant, the film is an unabashed mashup of E.T. and Indiana Jones filtered through Hong Kong martial arts excess. Score by Joseph Yip; action choreography by Tony Leung Siu-Hung. Andy Lo (Andy Lau) is a mercenary recruited to protect his archaeologist friend Shum Kwan (Phillip Ko), who has discovered a mysterious alien crystal in the ruins of Athens, Greece. Much of the film was shot on location, reportedly without permission, meaning genuinely bewildered tourists populate the background of chase scenes near the Acropolis. The crystal ends up in the hands of Andy's young nephew Ban-Ban (Bin Bin), who discovers it can talk, grant powers, and cause spectacular mischief. Cindy Morgan (Cynthia Rothrock), an Interpol agent, teams up with Andy while KGB operative Karov (Richard Norton), the film's standout physical presence, closes in. Norton's climactic weapon-work and Rothrock's Eagle Claw sequences are among the finest action choreography in Wong Jing's filmography.
What makes Magic Crystal so memorable and frustrating is its refusal to pick a tone. One minute it’s a lighthearted kids’ sci-fi adventure, the next it’s a full-blown martial arts brawl, and then it suddenly veers into slapstick comedy or gadget-driven espionage.
