Dario Argento takes the giallo template and spins it into surreal fairy-tale horror with Phenomena. Jennifer Connelly stars as Jennifer Corvino, a boarding school student and sleepwalker with the psychic ability to communicate with insects, who becomes entangled in a series of grisly murders in the Swiss Alps. With Donald Pleasence as Professor John McGregor, a wheelchair-bound Scottish entomologist who becomes her ally and a razor-wielding killer on the loose, the film veers from dreamy atmosphere to brutal violence without warning. Equal parts murder mystery, supernatural fantasy, and heavy-metal nightmare, Phenomena is Argento at his most unhinged, complete with a soundtrack mixing Goblin and Simon Boswell's score with heavy metal from Iron Maiden and Motörhead.
