The Couch Potato

“The Couch Potato” by Jory John, illustrated by Pete Oswald, Harper Collins Publishers, New York, Copyright 2020. A book about the world around us and putting ourselves in it.

Wanting to take it a step further? Are you a caregiver or work with children? Try this activity to go with “The Couch Potato”: Sometimes the world forces us to think outside the box. A power outage can be troublesome but it can also be an opportunity. A potato can be food but it can also be art! If you cut a potato in half and have an adult help you remove some of the potato, you can create your own stamp! Dip it in paint – tempera paint or finger-paint works good and then stamp it on paper. Now I have a hard time not eating an apple if I have one in the house, but you can also take an apple and cut it in half from stem end to blossom end, then dip it in paint and stamp it on paper – it’s natural curves create a beautiful image of what could be turned into a butterfly. Peppers cut in half make great flower stamps. If such foods are not easily accessible or expendable, try taking a small piece of wood, wrapping it in string – dip that in paint to create a cool stamp. What else can you find and use to make stamp art? Thinking outside the box can be so good for our emotional well-being.
