A Pocket Full of Kisses

“A Pocket Full of Kisses” by Audrey Penn, illustrated by Barbara Leonard Gibson, Scholastic Inc., New York, Copyright 2004. A book about feeling loved.

Are you a caregiver or work with children? You might try this activity to go with “A Pocket Full of Kisses”: Growing and gaining skills is part of life. Sometimes developing those skills can be scary and we need reminders that our loved ones are there for us even if they aren’t physically present. Maybe the child goes to school and often expresses a desire to be home or maybe they cling to your leg when you are in a new place or with people they don’t know. Your child might benefit from creating a transitional object – something they can keep with them and touch and see as a reminder of your love. It can be something small that might fit in their pocket or tie to their shoe or wear around their neck. It could be as simple as a stone you find outside. Use a permanent marker or acrylic paint and draw a heart on the stone to remind the child you love them. They can touch or rub their fingers on the stone when they need comfort and a reminder that they are loved.
