Where the wild things are

“Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, Scholastic Inc., New York, Copyright 1963. The wild within us - what it can look like and what we can do with it.

Wanting to take it a step further? Are you a caregiver or work with children? Try this activity to go with “Where the Wild Things Are”: Take something familiar – like your hand and draw around it on a piece of paper. Now take something like a cup and overlap that cup on top of your hand print and draw around the base of the cup. You should have a hand shape with a circle on top – interesting right? Your hand is familiar but you just brought something unfamiliar into the picture. Color in all the new shapes that you just made with different colors – the result will be a pretty abstract image. Sometimes life throws us something unfamiliar – maybe it’s a feeling of intense anger, feelings of mischief, or envy. We have to figure out what to do with that unfamiliar, make it a manageable and maybe even beautiful part of ourself just like Max in the book – he seemed to be able to take control of his “wild” feelings and behaviors and become at peace with them -- just in time to eat his warm supper.
