Algoma Discovery - Wearing the Many Shades of Rust

Here is the Algoma Discovery seen arriving in Superior, Wisconsin on the morning of April 21, 2024. She was arriving following the departure of the James R. Barker (seen in a previous video on this channel) to load iron ore pellets at the Burlington Northern #5 dock. The ore was scheduled for delivery to Hamilton, Ontario. As the Algoma Discovery approaches the BN dock, you can see crew members using the bosun's chair to move down to the dock to assist with tying up the ship.

The Algoma Discovery shows the many years of hard service in her paint job, much of which is scrapped through and rusted. Her sister ship, the Algoma Guardian, shows even more rust and weathering. These two vessels are likely nearing the end of their careers as Algoma Central continues to upgrade their fleet to more fuel efficient vessels that have lower emissions. While it's always interesting to see a newer ship with a fresh paint job, it is still fascinating to see an old ship that wears her miles on her hull for all to see.

The 729-foot Algoma Discovery was built in Croatia and was launched in 1986 under the name Malinska. In 1997, she came under the ownership of Viken Shipping and was renamed the Daviken. Another ownership change came in 2008 when she was purchased by Algoma Central and given her current name. In 2010, her deck-mounted unloading cranes were removed. At present, she has no self-unloading equipment in place and relies on shore-side equipment to unload. She has a cargo capacity of 35,500 tons and is powered by diesel engines with an output of 15,500 horsepower.
