Chief Minister: 'Over my dead body' would British sovereignty be ceded in treaty negotiations

The Chief Minister says he will not cede an iota of British sovereignty in treaty negotiations and would walk away immediately if there was a risk of this.

Fabian Picardo was speaking to GBC after the UK Parliament's European Scrutiny Committee again expressed alarm over planned arrangements for entry and exit from Gibraltar.

The predominantly Brexiteer committee heard from Junior Brexit Minister David Rutley. Committee members suggested British Sovereignty could be diminished at the airport.

Mr Picardo told GBC: “over my dead body”.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister told GBC he does not think the European Scrutiny Committee can create problems for Gibraltar as they have to respect the will of the people of Gibraltar.

He said Brexit, and Gibraltar’s exclusion from the UK’s own post Brexit Agreement, led to the complicated negotiations which - he says - continue on a very positive basis with the UK, EU and Spain.

Mr Picardo stressed he represents the people of Gibraltar in this process.
