Federal Delta - Saltie Arrives in Duluth Hungry for Wheat

Here's one ship that is not gluten-free! In this video we see the saltwater ship Federal Delta arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on August 18, 2020. She was in town to pick up a load of wheat from the Riverland Ag facility. The 656-foot Federal Delta was built in 2018 and sails under the flag of the Marshall Islands. While it wasn't initially clear what the destination was for the Federal Delta with her cargo, I followed her progress where she eventually ended up in Antwerp, Belgium on September 6.

At the beginning of the video, we see the vessel Sea Bear returning to the harbor after delivering a locally-qualified pilot to bring the Federal Delta into Duluth. While lakers often have a qualified pilot on board at all times, the saltwater ships only occasionally visit the Great Lakes... and thus need to bring a pilot on board when they enter (or exit) the harbor.

At the end of the video, I sped up the footage of the Federal Delta arriving at the Riverland Ag dock, as the process was too slow to present at actual speed. At least, I doubt most viewers would really care to watch 15 extra minutes of docking footage with very little change in the view!

Most of the ships from the Federal fleet have a very similar appearance in shape and paint scheme. If you watched the June arrival of the Federal Biscay on this channel, you might feel a bit of déjà vu with this video. But one welcome difference is that the Federal Delta gave a friendly salute upon her arrival... so hopefully that makes this video worth your time!

Also note how clearly one can see the waterline on the side of the Federal Delta, indicating how much lower she sits in the water when fully loaded. This line isn't always quite so clear on the lakers we see on this channel, but is often much more clear on the saltwater ships. This is most likely due to the corrosive nature of the saltwater they travel in.
